This type of news is practically the same as discussing president Obama playing gold during his down time. Yes, congressmen are having a drink at this time, they are human too. This is the type of "scandal" filled news that I usually turn away from.

House Republicans spent hours on Capitol Hill Saturday as a government shutdown loomed, but that didn't stop some of them from having a little weekend fun.
Reporters tweeted that they could see -- and smell -- several Congressmen enjoying a drink while working:
These types of stories tend to be exaggerated so far from the truth. So what if members of Congress enjoy a drink. This is not a time of Prohibition and all of the members of Congress are certainly of age, so I don't see where the story is. I like that you brought this to attention, because this type of "scandal" is exactly what the media is looking for, and it is unfortunate. I could see if members of Congress were drunk all of the time (such as government officials in Russia in the 80's and 90's), but they're not; they are simply enjoying a drink with their fellow Congressman. If anything, it probably helps them take some the stress off of the shutdown. I just do not see the big deal of this story, and fortunately, from what I have seen the media has not made this story a big deal... well not yet anyways.
ReplyDeleteI don't see why this would be any different from any other night. I think it's quite a bit in bad taste that thousands of government employees are out of work and they're sitting there receiving paychecks and drinking - as if without a care in the world. I agree with Aaron and you that this is not news. Articles should be reserved for specific happenings about the shutdown.
ReplyDeleteI think they are like any other person and drink, but they were happened to caught drinking during the time of the shutdown. I don't think it is any different than any other night, but it is kind of like the Carnival Cruise line's CEO getting caught at the game during the time one of his ships was stuck at sea. It's not like he could do anything about it at the time, but it is just bad PR to be doing these things during the time of need. Even so, I think these government officials could do less about the shutdown than the Carnival CEO could be doing about the ship.
